I'm currently listing a large number of playbills from out-of-town tryouts prior to the Broadway runs. Many are from early performances when revisions were common and include song titles that were cut before opening in New York. (See cut songs below.) ....... This is a rare November 1959 "Playgoer" playbill from the Pre-Broadway engagement of the Pulitzer Prize winning JERRY BOCK and SHELDON HARNICK musical comedy "FIORELLO!" at the Erlanger Theatre in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (The production would open November 23rd, 1959 at the Broadhurst Theatre in New York City and run for 795 performances.) ..... The musical starred Tony Award winner TOM BOSLEY as former New York City mayor "Fiorello H. La Guardia" and featured PATRICIA WILSON, ELLEN HANLEY, MARK DAWSON, NATHANIEL FREY, HOWARD DA SILVA, PAT STANLEY, RON HUSMANN, BOB HOLIDAY and EILEEN RODGERS ..... Side Note: "FIORELLO!" was the winner of six 1960 Tony Awards tieing "The Sound of Music" in four categories including "Best Musical" ..... CREDITS: Book by JEROME WEIDMAN and GEORGE ABBOTT; Music by JERRY BOCK and Lyrics by SHELDON HARNICK (together wrote the music and lyrics for "The Body Beautiful", "The Apple Tree", "Tenderloin", "Fiddler on the Roof", "The Rothschilds" and "She Loves Me"); Sets and Costumes designed by WILLIAM and JEAN ECKART; Choreographed by PETER GENNARO; Directed by GEORGE ABBOTT; Produced by ROBERT E. GRIFFITH and HAROLD S. PRINCE ..... CUT SONGS: The list of musical numbers includes "Business is Fundamentally Sound", "Where Do I Go From Here?" and "Till the Bootlegger Comes" which were cut out-of-town ..... DETAILS: The 16 page playbill measures 6" X 9" inches and includes full production credits, cast list, synopsis of scenes, list of musical numbers and bios of each of the leading actors, but no cast photos ..... CONDITION: With the exception of a light vertical crease and minor edge wear, this playbill is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any musical theatre aficionado or historian.
