I'm currently listing a large number of playbills from out-of-town tryouts prior to the Broadway runs. Many are from early performances when revisions were common and include song titles that were cut before opening in New York. (See cut songs below.) ....... This is a rare October 1960 program (playbill) from the Pre-Broadway tryout and WORLD PREMIERE engagement of the ALAN JAY LERNER and FREDERICK LOEWE musical "CAMELOT" at the O'Keefe Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. (The production would open December 3rd, 1960 at the Majestic Theatre in New York City and run for 873 performances.) ..... The musical starred RICHARD BURTON (Tony Award for "Best Actor in a Musical") and JULIE ANDREWS and featured RODDY McDOWALL, ROBERT COOTE, ROBERT GOULET, M'EL DOWD and JOHN CULLUM ..... CREDITS: Music by FREDERICK LOEWE; Book and Lyrics by ALAN JAY LERNER (Lerner and Loewe collaborated on "Brigadoon", "Paint Your Wagon", "My Fair Lady", "Camelot" and "Gigi") based on "The Once and Future King" by T. H. WHITE; Sets designed by OLIVER SMITH; Costumes designed by ADRIAN and TONY DUQUETTE; Choreographed by HANYA HOLM; Directed by MOSS HART; Produced by FREDERICK LOEWE, ALAN JAY LERNER and MOSS HART ..... DETAILS: The 36 page playbill measures 5 3/4" X 9" inches and includes full production credits, cast list, synopsis of scenes, list of musical numbers, individual photos and bios of each of the leading actors and the composer and lyricist ..... CUT SONGS: The list of musical numbers includes "Face to Face" which was cut out-of-town and "Fie On Goodness!" and "Then You May Take Me To the Fair" which were cut shortly after the Broadway opening ..... CONDITION: (Please Note!) There are the start of splits at both the top and bottom seam and a diagonal crease at the bottom right corner of the cover. Despite these flaws, this playbill will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any musical theatre aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective, carded sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard.
