Description
This is a rare October 10th, 1977 playbill from the one-week, National Tour engagement of the ALFRED UHRY and ROBERT WALDMAN musical "THE ROBBER BRIDEGROOM" at the Playhouse Theatre in Wilmington, Delaware. (The production opened October 9th, 1976at the Biltmore Theatre in New York City
and ran for 145 performances before going on the road.) ..... The musical started with an early 1970's production in producer Stuart Ostrow's Musical Theatre Lab, which invented the concept of the "workshop" development process for musicals. RAUL JULIA starred as "Lockhart". John Houseman's group, THE ACTING COMPANY took the show to the Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs, New York with KEVIN KLINE replacing Julia, PATTI LuPONE as "Rosamund", and MARY LOU ROSATO as "Salome". It then was staged at the Ravinia Festival in Chicago in the summer of 1975. The first Broadway production, with the same Ravinia cast directed by GERALD FREEDMAN and choreographed by DONALD SADDLER, opened in a limited engagement on October 6th, 1975 at the Harkness Theatre, where it ran for one preview and 14 performances before setting out on a one-year U.S. National Tour. Its success on the road convinced the producers to mount a revamped Broadway production with an extended book and expanded, heavily bluegrass-tinged score ..... This production starred FRANK LUZ as "Lockhart", BARBARA MARINEAU as "Rosamund" and LAURIE FRANKS as "Salome" and featured JOHN GOODMAN (in one of his earliest professional stage productions), TRIP PLYMALE, ERNIE SABELLA, THOMAS LEE SINCLAIR, SCOTT HOLMES, MAY KELLER, PENNY LEONE, STEPHANIE LYNNE, NANCY MILLER, DONALYN PETRUCCI, RICHARD WARREN PUGH, MICHAELAN SISTI, KENNY KOSEK, ROGER MASON, JOHN SHOLLE and JAMES TOLLES .....
