This is a rare autographed February 14th, 1939 programme (playbill) from one of eight Special Charity Matinee performances of theOSCAR WILDE classic "THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST" at the Globe Theatre in London. (The production opened January 31st, 1939 and played eight matinees ending on Tuesday, February 21st, 1939. The production with a few cast changes would return to the Globe Theatre on August 16th, 1939 for three weeks before transferring to the Golders Green Hippodrome for three nights. The production would return to the Globe Theatre on December 26th, 1939 for an additional eight weeks, closing February 24th, 1940.) ..... The play starred JOHN GIELGUD (who signed the front cover) as "John Worthing", EDITH EVANS
as "Lady Bracknell",

DETAILS: The sixteen page playbill measures 7 3/8" X 9 1/2" inches and includes full production credits, cast list, synopsis of scenes, individual photos of each of the leading actors and wonderful vintage advertising, but no cast bios. The front cover was signed by JOHN GIELGUD. The programme will be accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity ..... CONDITION: With the exception of light soiling to the cover and minor edge wear, this rare playbill is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any theatre aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective, carded sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard.
