George Gershwin "U.S.S. SEATTLE REVUE" Ziegfeld / Fannie Brice 1918 Program

This is a rare program (playbill) from the November 7th, 1918 performance of the "SECOND SEATTLE REVUE" aboard the U.S.S. Seattle Armored Cruiser which had returned to New York on October 27th, 1918 at the end of the war. Entertaining the returning servicemen were members of "ZIEGFELD'S MIDNIGHT FROLIC" and the "ZIEGFELD FOLLIES", directed by NED WAYBURN ..... The program is significant as it is likely the first printed documentation of a performance by GEORGE GERSHWIN (Gerschwin), who early in his career was a rehearsal pianist for Florenz Ziegfeld, Jr. and shared duties as accompanist with Dave Stamper (third scanned image). ..... DETAILS: The four page program measures 5 7/8" X 9" inches and includes a photo of the U.S.S. Seattle on the front, production credits, cast list, scenes and musical numbers on the inside pages and a wonderful advertisement for the "Ziegfeld Midnight Frolic" atop the New Amsterdam Theatre on the back ..... CONDITION: (Please Note!) There is a heavy fold across the middle which has resulted in a 2" inch tear from the outside edge and there are several additional tiny edge tears. The program shows moderate soiling, light creasing and minor edge wear. Despite these flaws, this rare program will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any musical theatre aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective, carded sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard.
