    Description

I'm currently listing a large number of playbills from out-of-town tryouts prior to the Broadway runs. Many are from early performances when revisions were common and include song titles that were cut before opening in New York. (See cut songs below.) ....... This is a rare March 3rd, 1938 playbill from the three-night, Pre-Broadway engagement of the COLE PORTER, ROBERT KATSCHER and ROWLAND LEIGH musical "YOU NEVER KNOW" at the Shubert Theatre in New Haven, Connecticut. (The production would open September 21st, 1938 at the Winter Garden Theatre in New York City and run for only 78 performances.) ..... The musical starred CLIFTON WEBB, LUPE VELEZ and LIBBY HOLMAN and featured TOBY WING, REX O'MALLEY,
KATHRYN CRAWFORD, CHARLES KEMPER, APRIL, GEORGE DOBBS and ROGER STEARNS
..... CREDITS: Music by COLE PORTER ("Anything Goes", "Red, Hot and Blue", "Leave It To Me!", "Du Barry Was a Lady", "Panama Hattie", "Something For the Boys", "Mexican Hayride", "Can-Can", "Kiss Me Kate", "Out Of This World", "Silk Stockings") and ROBERT KATSCHER; Lyrics by COLE PORTER; Book adapted by ROWLAND LEIGH from the Original Musical Play by ROBERT KATSCHER, SIEGFRIED GEYER and KARL FARKAS; Sets designed by ALBERT JOHNSON; Choreographed by ROBERT ALTON; Orchestrations by HANS SPIALEK; Directed by ROWLAND LEIGH; Produced by JOHN SHUBERT ..... DETAILS: This 16 page playbill measures 5 3/4" X 8 3/4" inches and includes full production credits, cast list, synopsis of scenes, list of musical numbers and wonderful vintage advertising, but no cast photos or bios ..... CUT SONGS: The list of musical numbers includes "By Candlelight", "The Cafe Society Set", "I'll Black His Eyes", "I'm Yours" and "The Waiters" which were cut out-of-town ..... CONDITION: With the exception of light creasing and minor edge wear, this rare playbill is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any musical theatre aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective, carded sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard.
