The amulet or Gau box serves a powerful talismanic function. They exist in Tibet, Mongolia and Nepal. The Gau is meant to ensure auspiciousness, promote the fulfillment of aspirations, and protect from harm, disease and evil. Moreover, it is a symbol of faith and devotion to one's religion. As a container for the sacred empowerments, the high lama priests reify the teachings and invocation of deities by actually invoking deity into an amulet, which is then worn.
Vajrapani(Chana Dorje)
Vajrapani (Tibetan: chag na dor je. English: the Vajra Holder): wrathful Tutelary Deity, representing the power of all Buddhas.
Blue in colour, with one face and two hands he holds aloft in the right a golden vajra. The left hand extended to the side displays a wrathful gesture. Yellow hair flows upward from the top of the head. Adorned with gold and jewel ornaments, a crown, bracelets and the like, the upper body is covered with the skin of a snow lion, white, with a green mane. The lower body is wrapped with a tiger skin. Treading upon two prone forms, a sun disc and multi-coloured lotus blossom, he stands surrounded by the orange-red flames of pristine awareness.
Vajrapani is alsocalled The Secret King. It is one of the Vajras, the incarnation of the Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattva. In the legend, the canon of Esotericism which has been taken out from the iron tower by Nagarjuna is edited by Vajrapani who gained the name because of holding a Vajra's poke.
In the past, when the yogin Nuden Dorje conferred empowerment on those who were to become the one thousand and tow buddhas of this eon, Vajrapani vowed to codify and protect their teachings. He is empowered as the one upholding the treasury of secrets of all the victorious ones and acts as the basis for the emanation of countless miraculous powers. The form depicted here is from a hidden treasure teaching conferred by the precious master Padma on the king and his subjects, and especially on Lhalung Palgyi Dorje. It hold the power to dispels obstacles such as illness.
